This book took me into the heart and mind of unbearable emotions and incredible determination. I was skillfully drawn in, carried along, and very deeply moved. It was all worth my early struggle to understand the flow of the book.

I'd give ABSENT FRIENDS a ten if I could. What a tour-de-force. I now need to start on Ms. Rozan's backlist/5(18). Absent Friends is the kind of read that just gets better and better as it goes along. The characters are many, and at times it was a bit confusing.

But they are also, as Richard Bausch comments in The Philadelphia Inquirer, “friends we have failed, or who have failed us; it is the emotional cost of that.

S J Rozan is fastly becoming one of my favourite authors, and this book, Absent Friends, only serves to reinforce that opinion. Set over many decades, it tells the story of a group of friends (Jimmy, Markie, Vicky, Sally, Tom, Jack and Marian), from their childhood days at school, through their teens, their twenties and then, finally, in the aftermath of 9//5(9).

In particular, it is the traditional toast for Sunday night in Commonwealth navies. At some banquets, it is illustrated literally by having an empty table set aside and specially decorated in memory of POW/MIA's.
